Ever been waiting in line at the airport thinking wow wouldn’t it be amazing to be upgraded…..you stand that little bit straighter, smile every so nicely at the check in person and maybe you’ve gone a step further and fancied up your outfit before arriving to look every so super smart in the hope they will think you of the right calibre. (I know I have….)
Cold hard truth though is that airlines are a business and they want to make money. So it’s rare as hens teeth they give anything away.
I’m sitting in First class on the Etihad A380 writing this.
And let me tell you this isn’t just a seat….it’s oh boy, an apartment…..(Seriously we could fit eight people in here…..) Check out this video of Ronan Keating (yep showing my age here peeps, I follow him on Twitter) having kittens on the very same aircraft.
So how did I Ms Money Coach sort this one out?
Pay for it?
Uh no…. (do you know how much this costs!)
Did I just get it given to me?
Like heck I did.
I’ve had to work hard for my upgrade.
Of course the airline would like to sell some of these seats for actual money, maybe they give some away to vvvvvips, then they have staff tickets, the option to upgrade at the desk for a fee, and a bid for your upgrade system too…..and then there are the loyalty points.
Frankly I’m surprised any first class seats go at full price at all.
And if you think after all that you’d get an upgrade for free, uh uh probably not…
So what have I done. I’ve worked out how to get the most from their loyalty card, by studious application and a little bit of flexibility on my side.
It’s quite simple it’s my loyalty points are what have kept me in Business Class and today First Class over the last two years of heading back and forth to Abu Dhabi, without parting for a penny for it. (Shucks, of course I could have eeeked it out my using the points for economy, but life has to have some perks eh? Remember I advocate having a splurge fund?)
The funny thing is that lots of people don’t even collect the points. For this or any other loyalty type scheme.
Why you ask? Are they crazy? They could be popping their slippered feet up on the bed with a glass of Bollinger in hand.
Here are some “reasons” I have heard as to why people don’t sign up for loyalty cards….
Those things are a waste of time and don’t work
It’s part of a conspiracy to control us all
Why should I have to do the extra leg work, it’s just something else to think about
I earn enough not to be bothered
These are all what George Kinder (Author of Money Maturity) calls mechanisms of dependence.
He asserts that we use excuses like this in our lives, businesses, and money behaviour in order that we stay in the world of innocence, where we don’t really have to try that hard, take responsibility, and face up to our money mindset. We spend too much time wallowing in conspiracy theories, resentment, simple oblivion and magical thinking.
So I challenge you this if you want to upgrade your life and your money to FIRST CLASS then notice where in your life you are making excuses, that stop you taking the next step to working out what is out there, on offer and for your advantage.
